Daily Discard

The Daily Discard is about throwing stuff out. It’s a spiritual quest to simplify life. Each day I find something around the house which is no longer needed, doesn’t work any more, has outlived its purpose or is just plain junk. Then I throw it away or give it away.

Incense Stick Container

I don't know why I kept this but it has been hanging around for ages.

Out it goes!

Brass Ashtrays

These 'personal' ashtrays are brass and are hand carved and enameled.

They are quite small, only 8cm long and are not a pair.

I was collecting brass knickknacks for a while when I found them in thrift shops. These only cost a dollar each.

I have never used them as ashtrays. I am sure someone will find them on the footpath and may enjoy them.

Pebble

This is a single decorative pebble. They type you see in decorative bowels at modern decor shops.

Don't know where all it's mates are.

No need to leave it sitting at the bottom of a draw.

Cheque Book

This cheque book is for an account that I closed 2 years ago.

Still quite a few cheques in it.

Rip it up. Rip it up. In the bin.

Street Directory Bookmark

Don't know where this bookmark came from. I've never used it.

I wonder if anyone will pick it up if I leave it on the footpath?

One US Dollar

I went to the United states in 1999 - Los Angeles and to a work conference in San Antonio, TX.

It was a fine country at the time although it seems to have gone down hill since.

I arrived home with one US dollar in my pocket. It's no use to me, not a large enough amount to bother converting to local currency.

I'll leave it on the footpath. Someone may think it's a great find.

Empty Boxes

I have this thing about keeping the boxes that equipment comes in. I put them aside - just in case the equipment fails and I have to take it back to the shop. I'd then have the box to put it them.

I bought a couple of 512mg mp3 players very cheaply. The boxes, as boxes go, are quite good quality. Solid cardboard with a magnetic clasp. In fact, the boxes are better quality than the mp3 players themselves.

But really they are of no use. So in the bin they go.

Shirt

This shirt cost $5.00. But I have never worn it. It's not the colours, it's the material. It's a sort of shiny nylon which wouldn't be good on a hot day.

It will go in the Salvo's bin.

Coach Screws

I don't really know what these coach screws are for. Perhaps for a bed head we don't have.

I wonder if anyone else can use them?

Maneki Neko

This figurine of the famous Japanese Maneki Neko cat is meant to have have a battery operated moving arm.

Unfortunately the mechanism is broken and it no longer waves.

I'll leave it on the font fence to beckon.

Cigarette Lighter Cover

I've had this "Marlbroro Big Country" metal cigarette lighter cover for a long, long time. But I gave up smoking more than 10 years.

Time to throw it out. Someone will find it.

Nettle Leaf Tea

I generally like herbal tea. I drink chamomile a lot. And Maté tea.

But I've discovered I don't like Nettle Leaf tea.

My plan is to take the lable off, and tie it with a rubber band. If left on the footpath here in St Kilda, someone may mistake it for a bag of something else....

Plastic Cups

These plastic cups have been sitting in the cupboard with the glasses and mugs and things. They are never used.

There was some suggestion that they could be kept until we have grandchildren. That could be years away. I'm happy to by some new ones should the need arise.

Brass wine pourer

This ornamental piece has been around the house for a while. The lid was originally attached via a hinge but I broke it a few days ago.

I'll put it on the fence outside and see if anyone has taken it by morning.

Dinner Suit

My Dad gave me this dinner suit. It was given to him about 40 years ago.

I wanted to give it to my son. But it don't even fit him.

I'll put it in the Savo bin.

Shoes

I like Rivers shoes. And I liked these.

Now worn out and splitting.

Goodby.

Sandalwood Oil

I bought this cheap just yesterday from a 2 Dollar shop. I should have sniffed it in the shop. It must be old 'cause there's no smell left!

Out in the bin it goes.

Pocket PC Developer's Guide

I was doing some software development for Pocket PCs in a previous job. Developing a system for recording parking tickets for local government. This was a $100 book back then. You can now get it on Amazon for as low as $4.00

I don't even have a Pocket PC anymore.

Let's see if anyone picks it up from the street.

Cowboy Hat

This cheap cowboy hat was for a Wild Wild West fancy dress event last year. I wore all in black and this black hat. I looked fine!

It's been gathering dust since then.

Some passerby in St Kilda may like it.

Cat Litter

When we first moved to this place we kept our cats inside for a few days while they got used to the place. So we had to have some cat litter for them. There was quite a bit left a when they did start going outside. The half used bag has stayed in the cupboard for two and a half years.

Then when we got the new kitten, we had forgotten about the bag of cat litter in the cupboard and bought some more. When the kitten was old enough to go outside, we were left with another half used bag of cat litter.

Time to get rid of it. Our friend Sues down the street has an indoor cat, so I will give the leftover bags to her.

Single Jigsaw Puzzle Piece

This is a single piece of a jigsaw puzzle of Australia. (This piece is a section of Queensland that includes Long Reach.)

I have no idea where the rest of the pieces are.

In the bin now.

Mug

This mug looks perfectly OK untill you realise that it is only 5cm high.

A souvenier from Hahdorf? No, it's a collectable made in Australia.

It was left here by the previous occupant of our place.

Someone will find it sitting on the fencepost outside.

Library Card

This card is obviously a membership card for the Yarra Plenty Regional Library. Is says so plainly on the card and has my name on the back.

I probably only used this card once when I lived over that way and it has stayed with me through multiple house moves since.

Might as well bin it. But I'll cut it in half first. I wouldn't want anyone to start using it!

Clock

This travel clock came free. It was stuck to the top of a large jar of coffee.

I have many other clocks - without advertising.

I've put a new battery in it and set it to the correct time. Good luck to whoever finds it out on the footpath.

Mobile Phone Manual

I don't remember ever owning this phone. But I still have the manual taking up space.

Out it goes in the bin.

Alphabet Stencil Ruler

This must have belonged to one of the kids. It's been sitting in the bottom of a drawer for some time.

I have no use for it. I have a computer with lots of fonts.

Someone will find it on the street.

...Stuff

My friend Sue sent me this cartoon when she saw my blog.
This is exactly what this blog is about.
Thanks Sue (and Leunig)

Candle Holder

Don't know where this candle holder came from, but I have others that are more elegant.

This one will be left out for someone else to pickup and use.

I wonder if I can leave it outside still burning?

Betagard Antioxidant Tablets

Use by date on these is 9/97. Still almost a full jar.

How come they have survived 3 or 4 house moves?

Out in the garbage now.
