Daily Discard

The Daily Discard is about throwing stuff out. It’s a spiritual quest to simplify life. Each day I find something around the house which is no longer needed, doesn’t work any more, has outlived its purpose or is just plain junk. Then I throw it away or give it away.

CD Holder

Before fast internet connections, a good way to get free software was to buy computer magazines with a CD stuck on the front cover. They were always full of the latest shareware and freeware. I bought lots of these and kept my collection in CD holders like this.

Not needed anymore. All the CDs were given away so I don't need the holders any more.

Ill put it out and someone will take it and use it.

Dinosaur Toy

Nicky was here for a few days. She went to the Melbourne Show. This battery operated dinosaur was in one of the showbags she bought. It amused the cats for a while.

Now Nicky has gone again. But she left this behind. We are sad to see her go. But we don't need a toy dinosaur. Ill put it outsite and see if anyone takes it away.

Local Telephone Directories

Who uses printed local telephone directories when all the information is available on the web?

Out they go... I hope I can find a re-cycling bin.

Wooden Massage Tool

This massage thing came with another one with handles that you drag across your own back. I don't know what part of the body this is meant to massage. I have never used it.

I'll leave it out on the footpath and see if anyone wants it.

Black Shirt

A favorite blach shirt at one time. Now it's ripped down one side.

Off to the Salvation Army bin.

Pass the Pigs

This is a stupid game. I've played it only once but it is too stupid to play again.

I'll put it out the front and someone might get some fun out of it.

TV cable splitter

We needed a better TV cable splitter. We need to split the cable to run an extention into the bedroom. We have an outlet in the lounge room that is connected to the aerial on top of the building. The reception is not too good, but with a Digital Set Top Box, we can get good picture. Unfortunately, when it is windy, channel 10 keeps dropping out. Especially when the cable is split. So I bought a new one at a cheap shop for only $2. Bargain! It worked well until an exceptionally windy day. So to bypass the splitter it was unplugged and it just broke.

See.....

Out it goes - in the bin.
(You get what you pay for.)

Stone ash tray

This ash tray was left in the house by the previous residence. We don't smoke. No one is alowed to smoke in the house, so I'll put it out to be taken away.

Old .85Gb hard drive

Manufactured in 1995, this old .85Gb hard drive has been sitting in a box of computer components for some time. It 's from the first PC I ever bought. The disk was replaced with a larger one, and later the computer itself thrown out. But this thing has still been sitting in the box.

VTAC Guide

My daughter did her last year of high school in 2003. This guide is a 564 page listing of all the University and other tertairy courses in the state for 2004.

It's out of date and just taking up space in the bookcase. No use to anyone else, so it's now out with the garbage.

(My daughter is currently doing a course in Multimedia at RMIT.)

Megadophilus

Megadophilus Lactobacillus Acidophilus & Bifidus.

Capsules found in the cupboard with a use by date of 01/2004.

Thrown out in the garbage.

Sunglasses

These glasses aren't used. They aren't dark enough, aren't polarised and are too small. The kids don't want them either.

I left them on the roof of the car parked out the front of the house.

Winter Coat

This used to be my favorite coat but it's a bit old now. I havn't worn it for a couple of years.

It's now gone in the bin to go to the Salvation Army.

Glow Necklace

At the Awards Dinner on Saturday night, they were giving away glow necklaces when you went on the dance floor.

These things only last a few hours befor they run out of 'glow'. So when we got home around midnight we hung them on the front fence so that someone walking past could take them and enjoy them while we went off to bed.

Table centrepiece candle holder

Went out to dinner Chris' work awards on Saturday. It was a grand affair - 1200 people at the Crown palladium ballroom.

On each table there was a centrepiece - 40cm tall with a large candle inside. A bit hard to describe and I didn't get a photo. Each person at each table at the dinner was given a number. They drew a number and the person on each table with number 7 got to keep the centrepiece. I WON IT!
So, rather than lugging it home, then throwing it out, I left it there.

Chris says this doesn't count for throwing something out. But I just think I cut out the middle man by throwing it out immediately. Before starting this daily discard thing, I would have taken it home, left it hanging around until the next time we moved house, then thrown it out.

Book - FrontPage 2000 The Complete Reference

Had this book when I worked at my previous job. It includes a CD of examples of web pages created with FrontPage.

It's out of date and I don't use FrontPage.

Left it out on the footpath. Gone next morning. Someone might be creating a new web page using 6 year old technology!

Boots

Had an old pair of boots that I never wore. Size eight.

Left out on the footpath - gone the next morning. Hope that someone will get some ware out of them.

Digital Clock

I've thrown out a digital clock (sorry no photo).

The battery was flat and I couldn't work out how to open up the clock to replace it.

I left it sitting on the bins out the front and it was gone a couple of hours later.

Kite Ship

The first item discarded is a kite. It has been sitting on top of the cupboard in the bedroom gathering dust.

I left it on the footpath and it was gone the next day.

Discarding the unnessasary

I've set out on a mission - to throw out unnessary suff arround the house.

So each day, I'll find something that is no longer needed - and throw it away.
