Daily Discard

The Daily Discard is about throwing stuff out. It’s a spiritual quest to simplify life. Each day I find something around the house which is no longer needed, doesn’t work any more, has outlived its purpose or is just plain junk. Then I throw it away or give it away.

Black Shoes

Haven't blogged for a while and the place is getting cluttered again.

It's time to throw some more stuff out!

Let's start with this pair of shoes.

Book - "It was On Fire When I Lay Down On It"

The author of this book totally missed the meaning of the title of his own book!

It comes from a joke: Firemen are called to a house with smoke pouring from the window. They break in and find a man in a smouldering bed. They ask him "How did this happen?"

He answers "I don't know. It was on fire when I lay down in it."

The author thinks that this is a case of someone doing something stupid, and is unable to explain why they did it. This whole book is based on that premise. It's about people doing dumb things and not knowing why. And he tells stories about how we all do that.

He has missed the point. The guy in the bed does know what happened - he was smoking in bed (and probably drunk as well) and he set the bed on fire. But, he does not want to take responsibility for setting the bed on fire so he lies! He is saying "It's not my fault... It was on fire when I got into it"

The guy in the bed is just being dishonest!

Stupid book.

I'll throw it out.

Can Opener

We have two of these can openers. One of them works very well. The other one does not always cut through, leaving the lid of the can attached by one or two strands of metal.

This is very annoying when you are trying to feed the cats. And it annoys the impatient cats as well while you wiggle and bend and twist the lid or try to get a knife under it to prise it open.

This one should have been thrown out a long time ago.

Woollen Hat

A friend of mine was making woollen hats and selling them for a good cause.

I bought one for $10, but I'll never wear it.

This is something else I can leave on the front fence and someone may want it.

Round Rubric's Cube

This round Rubric's Cube is difficult to manipulate because there are no edges to hang on to when you twist it.

Notice that this puzzle has been solved. All the colours are correct. So I have completed it once.

I'll leave it out on the front fence. Someone may have some fun with it.

Brass Jug

Another brass object that's been hanging around the house. This one isn't great quality - so out it goes.

I'll leave it on the front fence.

Corn Pad

Corn pads come in packs of eight. You are supposed to use them every day for eight days. I only used seven and the corn is gone.

One by itself is no good. It's just taking up space in a drawer. So out it goes.

Book - Farts & Fevers

Where did this book come from? And why is it in my bookcase?

Ahhh .. I remember being in this second hand bookshop in Richmond and picking it up for very cheaply.

It's author, Earle Hackett, was a broadcaster on ABC radio so it sounded OK.

I tried, but I'll never read it. It'll go out to the Salvos.

Franz Lehár CD

At Christmas, I was given a new CD of Bach which was wonderful. So my sister-in-law, sure that I like classical music, dragged out the CD of Franz Lehár and gave it to me. She said that she didn't like it and would never listen to it.

I agree with her. I don't like it and would never listen to it. I'll leave it somewhere for someone to find.

Shoes

Don't like them. Never wear them. Throw them out.

Fluffy Dice

I used this dice at a function I helped organise last year. It was used to help people decide which workshop they should attend.

It's wrecked now because of the bits of paper that have been stuck to the 'fluff'.

Out it goes.

Broken Hairbrush

This broke in my hand today.

No, I won't try and glue it back together. I have a number of other hair brushes I can use.

Yellow Pages

Every year they leave a stack of Yellow Pages outside our door. One for each of the flats that share our stairwell.

No one ever seems to claim one. Neither do we. Why would I want one of these huge telephone books, when it is all available on the net?

I've put them out on the nature strip.

Handbag Strap

I'm told that when you buy a ladies handbag, you sometimes get two straps to go with it - a long one and a short one so you have a choice and you can carry it in your hand or sling it over your shoulder.

This is the 'long' strap that's never been used from one of Chris' handbags.

Bags of clothes

Yesterday, Chris and I threw out four garbage bags of clothes!
Here they are in the boot of the car waiting to go to the Salvation Army bin.

Shoes

These shoes are slightly too small. They are a pinch to wear, so I never do.

Out in the Salvo bin.

Brass Incence Holder

Actually, this is only the top part. I don't know where the bottom part is.

It can go. And if I do ever find the bottom half, it can go as well.

Glass Fish

This is Nicole's fish. She has been living in Queensland for some time, and has been visiting recently. She can't take it back with her so we are discarding it. She has put it out on the fence herself.

Clothes

These two shirts and a top and a couple of pairs of pants from Chris are the next items to go to the Salvo's bin.

(How's that? Five items thrown out in one day? It makes up for the days I was away on retreat.)

Sesame Oil

I've been away for a week on a World Peace Assembly meditation course so I the only things I have been discarding is stress and fatigue.

But I did take this bottle of sesame oil with me. It is a great aid to sleep if you massage it into your forehead and temples before bed. I left the remainder of it there.....

Car Key

The first car I had was a Corolla. I think it ended up being used to drive around the paddocks on a farm.

Kept this key for a long while.

Time to throw it out.

Spice Rack

It's been sitting in the kitchen cupboard for two years. This wooden spice rack has a McCormick brand label on it. They sell spices and Aeroplane Jelly.

I'll leave it out on the footpath. Someone will take it.

Floppy Disk holder

I don't ever use floppy disks any more. In an on-line society, I don't even use CDs to copy things around.

Don't need this disk holder, so someone can have it for Christmas.

Saturday, December 23, 2006

Pants

They don't fit any more and never will.

Out they go in the Salvo bin.

Book - The God Stories by Leila Berg

Here's a boring book.

There it goes.....

Footie Beanie

In 2005 Sydney Football Club played West Coast Eagles in the AFL Grand Final. I went to function to watch the game and, because I don't support either club, I chose West Coast to barrack for.

So I bought this blue and yellow beanie to wear for the day. West Coast lost and don't need the beanie any more.

Raffle Tickets

These raffles were drawn a while ago. No one contacted us so we can't have won.

It must be said that I didn't buy them. I discarded all forms of gambling some years ago - another spiritual exercise.

Broken Hook

It's been sitting the cardboard box under the bed where we keep useful tools.

But this one is not useful because it is broken.

Multi Vitamins

As you can see, the use-by date on this jar of Sustained Release Multi Vitamins and Minerals is July 2001. Why is it still in the cupboard?

In the bin with it!

Shirt

I just don't like this pin stripe shirt and never wear it. It'll go in the Salvo bin as well.

Scaf

This is a scarf , although it could be mistaken for a bar towel.

It's a promotional thing from work. They were given out to clients at the launch of one our products. The launch was held at the minus 5 bar in Sydney. A realy 'cool' bar made entirely from ice. So the patrons needed as scarf to stay warm. There were some scarves left over so were given to staff. I'll never wear it. But Alex from work wears his every day under his motorbike helmet.

I'll put it out in the Salvo bin.

Phone Charger Plug

This little plug connected a mobile phone to a charger powered by AA batteries. I no longer have the phone or the charger.

I won't ever miss it when I throw it out.

Clip-on

I found this sunglass clip-on for glasses somewhere and held on to them in case someone claimed them.

I've had them for too long. No one will claim them now. Pitty - when I lost mine, it cost me $110 to replace them.

Magazine

I have no idea why this apc magazine has been sitting in the bookcase since April 2004. I don't remember buying it, and I don't buy computer magazines any more.

It'll go in the bin.

Cap

I bought this cap at the Fremantle E Shed Markets during our trip to Perth in August. It was a great sunny day I hadn't brought one with me.

I don't particuarly like the black and yellow design. I now have another (plain black) cap. So I don't need this one.
